SPECTRA formed by local Valenite Management buy out as Murray & Roberts unbundled and sold off their engineering division.
1999
SPECTRA appointed as sole Valenite Distributors in Southern Africa. Marketing Indexable inserts & tooling for all CNC & conventional machines, for the following applications: drilling, turning, milling, boring, etc.
1999 SPECTRA appointed as sole Widia Distributors in Southern Africa (this brings South Africa inline with the rest of the world following the merger of previous competitors Widia and Valenite into one company, giving a choice of two full competitive Indexable insert and tooling ranges from one supplier).

SPECTRA appointed as sole Mapal Distributors in Southern Africa. High precision reamers and specialized tooling; CBN PCD tipped tools. Tool presetting machines.

2000 Tool management division formed to look after the growing tool management program and sole supplier partnerships being negotiated with several customers.

SPECTRA negotiate contracts with various tooling manufacturers to supply direct into Spectra tool management accounts and Spectra sole supplier accounts to benefit their customer base and avoid using 3rd parties.

 

Tooling manufacturers and products available for these customers, over and above our agency agreements with Valenite, Widia, Safety, Ceramtec, Mapal, Menlo, Miller, Delta and Botek such contracts to Spectra remain:

  a. Hammond (UK) - Gun drills & related products
  b. Nagel (Germany) - Honing tools
  c. Emuge - Taps, tap holders & gauges
  d. Somta - H.S.S. drills, core drills, standard & special including brazed carbide tools.
  e. Werko - All types of H.S.S. tooling

2002

Secure Menlo exclusive distributorship agreement. Menlo specializes in micrograin carbide and coated carbide Endmills, Drills, Reamers, Burrs for all types of materials: steels, hardened steels, Aluminium etc.

2002 Miller exclusive distributorship agreement. Miller Carbide Drills standard and all types of Special Drills made to customer specification. Full Design and manufacture capability.

2003 May SPECTRA appointed as sole Safety distributors in Southern Africa marketing micro-boring and indexable inserts and tooling specializing in die & mould and indexable insert broaches.
2003 Oct SPECTRA appointed as sole distributor for Delta tooling a full range of adaptors, HSK, CNC, & conventional consisting of side lock, collet chucks, shell/face mill, combi mill, hydraulic chucks, modular systems etc.
2003 Nov Officially opened new training facility at SPECTRA head office, seats 30-50 delegates, surround sound, big screen, DVD, VHS and CD player, DSTV facility, laptop and docking statin linked to screen, ceiling mounted video projector, internet and e-mail access, hands-free microphone.

2004 Aug SPECTRA appointed as sole Ceramtec distributor in Southern Africa marketing full range of silicon nitride and ceramic indexable inserts. Ceramtec have developed pressing new chip forming geometries into the indexable insert, enabling vast improvements in productivity on cast iron and steel, especially hardened steel.

2005 Jan SPECTRA open new offices in Jet Park Johannesburg 213m2 of floor space and appoint a new inland divisional Manager to head up the team, total investment on new infrastructure into this area will be in excess of R1,000,000 over the 2005 calendar year.
2005 Mar SPECTRA open new office Durban Kwazulu Natal and appoint a Technical Sales Engineer to represent Spectra direct; this completes the 5 year plan to have direct representation in all the major centers: Johannesburg, Vereeniging, Pretoria, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town by end 2005.
2005 Apr SPECTRA appointed as agents for full Botek product range consisting of single flute gundrills, twin-fluted gundrills, deephole ejector drillheads, indexable and solid carbide, full range of specially designed deephole drilling tools available.
2005 Jul SPECTRA Metal Cutting Fluids & Lubricants (Pty) Ltd. launched, marketing the latest Cimcool product range incorporating the latest environmentally friendly metal cutting fluids, cleaning liquids and lubricants for all types of metal removal. This company will run independently of Spectra Carbide; however both companies have contracted priority service and pricing for Spectra Tool Management and national customer base.
2005 Aug SPECTRA Mapal Tool Manufacture & Service Centre (Pty) Ltd. launched; this 5 ½ million rand joint venture between Spectra Carbide and Mapal (high precision tooling) of Germany, incorporating the latest CNC type metal cutting tool machines, capable of regrinding the latest solid carbide drills, taps, gundrills and endmills etc. to original manufacturers specifications, plus capability to manufacture new cutting tools from high quality carbide blanks. This plant is to be I.S.O. 9001 and 14000 accredited.
2005 Oct

SPECTRA purchase new office building and move Spectra Carbide Tooling Technology (Pty) Ltd. and Spectra Metal Cutting Fluids & Lubricants (Pty) Ltd under one roof into their new head office from the current rented premises of 500m2 to a new 1000 m2 premises situated in Desmond Street, Port Elizabeth.

SPECTRA purchase new Cape Town office building and move Spectra Carbide Tooling Technology (Pty) Ltd. and Spectra Metal Cutting Fluids & Lubricants (Pty) Ltd under one roof into their new Cape Town branch office (approximately 500 m2) situated in Montague Gardens, Cape Town.

Start the rollout of voice-over I.P. between P.E. head office, Cape Town and overseas supplier base; all Spectra area offices to be fitted out by 3rd quarter 2007

Spectra sign a Tool management agreement with V.W.S.A. (level 4). This is a full on customer site operation; Spectra are responsible to purchase, store, issue and control all tooling required in the V.W. Engine Plant. Spectra employ 10 persons on-site at V.W. including the responsibility to manage 4 staff members in the re-sharpening and rework area.

Spectra now have 3 level four tool managements in operation and numerous level 1-3 operations:

  • Atlantis Foundries Daimler Chrysler engine plant. 2002 – to date
  • Atlantis Forge Daimler Chrysler crank shaft plant. 2004 – to date
  • V.W.S.A. engine block. 2007 – to date

Fitted head office out with a 16-camera CCTV system with the capability to view the premises via the internet at any location throughout the world.

Spectra acquire access to Automated Vending machines through Toolboss, a market leader in the supply chain service program, improving efficiency and cost reduction through unmanned 24hr/7 day a week tool availability and distribution points, with the ability to record all tool usage by whoever for whatever, whenever, automated vending a tool for the future now available through SPectra.
